Whither Maryland?

In the break room at work the other day, I found myself skimming through a travel magazine and saw a two-page ad for Maryland complete with a map. It's an exquisitely-shaped state, even though like nearly all others, its outline is made up of straight lines and rivers. One part is so thin it looks like you might try to jump over it, and the whole thing ends with an unusual triangular chunk of land in the west.
I got to thinking, it looks like the sort of thing that results from a surveying error. Maybe some misguided cartographer believed the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay were connected? Here's how I think it would have worked out before the mistake was discovered.
There's not really much else for me to do on break when I forget to bring my own reading material.
